Hi, my name is Constance Graves. I have been an educator for 6 years, but I’ve accomplished so much already! I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, and a Master’s Degree in Education, more specifically with a focus on bilingual elementary education. I was a 5th grade bilingual self-contained teacher for 1 year, in which I taught math, science, reading, and social studies, and I was a 5th grade bilingual reading teacher for 3 years. I’ve been the Dyslexia Interventionist at my elementary campus for the past 2 years, as well as I travel and work with students daily at the middle school level. I am a reading teacher at heart! I can teach a younger child to learn to read, as well as teach an older child to read to learn.
Learning to Read: With learning to read, the child is doing simply that – building the basic foundational skills required to read. We would work on phonics (letter-sound knowledge), phonemic awareness (how word parts work together), blending and unblending sounds to create words, as well as the child will focus on learning grade-level appropriate sight words.
Reading to Learn: With reading to learn, the child already knows how to read, but lacks the metacognitive skills necessary for accessing and fully understanding the text. We would work on making inferences, making connections, asking questions, determining importance, synthesizing, and summarizing the text.
STAAR: Since I taught in a STAAR grade level for many years, I can also assist your child with simply getting prepared for the STAAR test that is coming in the Spring. In addition to working on the metacognitive strategies as mentioned above, we would also work on how to dig into a STAAR reading passage. We would focus on really understanding what the question is asking, and going back into the text to find evidence to support the answer.
Dyslexia: In that I am a trained Dyslexia Interventionist, I understand the special challenges that a student with Dyslexia faces when it comes to reading, and I would be able to assist your child with using some of the same strategies taught within his/her school district’s Dyslexia program. My services would not take the place of the services offered by the school district – my services would simply be something extra to help your child even more!
ESL: I am accustomed to working with children; however, I am equipped to work with adults as well!
Areas Served: I would be available to travel to Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Irving, Grand Prairie, and Arlington. If you are wondering if I would be able to serve your area, just call or send a message and I will let you know! The tutoring would take place in your home, or at a library or other quiet public place near your home.
Thank you so much for checking out our website. We hope to hear from you! Remember, when it comes to intervention for your child, the sooner the better!
